Allan King Way

Portchester to Winchester

A 44-mile linear walk across Hampshire, created in the 1990s by Hampshire Area as a memorial to Allan King, a former publicity officer who helped set up several groups in the county. The route is waymarked and described in Richard Kenchington's guidebook, which was imported onto this site as a single page. This set of pages is a demonstration of the route row: each stage is a walk in its own right, with a map, generated directions, start details and a write-up.

Getting there

Start at Portchester station (trains from Portsmouth, Fareham and Southampton) or at the castle car park. Finish at Winchester station. Linear stages work well with a bus or a second car at the far end.

Parking

There is parking at Portchester Castle, Fort Nelson, Bishop's Waltham and in Winchester. Street parking at the smaller villages is limited.

Refreshments

Cafes at the castle and Fort Nelson, The Chairmakers at World's End, pubs in Soberton, Bishop's Waltham, Upham and Itchen Abbas, and plenty of choice in Winchester.
